Bangor delays vote on minimum wage increase

Citing the need for more information, the Bangor City Council has voted to delay any action on a minimum wage increase until after this November’s election.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the city council’s vote delays any council-wide consideration of the proposal to Nov. 23. In the meantime, it will be discussed by the council’s Business and Economic Development Committee. The proposal calls for raising Bangor’s minimum wage to $8.25 an hour in 2016, to $9 in 2017 and then to $9.75 in 2018. The minimum wage would then be adjusted on a yearly basis according to the Consumer Price Index.

The newspaper said the decision to delay came after Councilor Ben Sprague raised questions about how the proposal would impact tipped workers, small businesses and nonprofits, among other details. However, he said it has created a great policy debate among councilors.
