New life for former Scarborough Commons site

Martin’s Point Health Care hopes to build a health center on the site of the former Scarborough Commons, which was gutted by a fire last year.

The Forecaster reported that, if approved, the health care center would replace a center in South Portland’s Knightville neighborhood at 51 Ocean St.

Martin’s Point Health had considered building a new site at Sawyer and Ocean streets in South Portland, but withdrew a proposal in May after facing neighborhood opposition, the Forecaster reported.

Scarborough Commons, at 153 U.S. Route 1, sustained $1 million in damage in a three-alarm fire in September. The fire was ruled accidental.

Martin’s Point Health Care, which is based in Portland, is a nonprofit health care and health-insurance provider for Medicare beneficiaries and military retirees and their families. It has 800 employees working at several locations in southern Maine and Portsmouth, N.H.

A year ago, Martin’s Point opened a facility in Gorham at a cost of $5 million.
