At least 35 jobs to be cut at Charleston prison

The change of Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston from a youth to an adult prison will result in at least 35 positions being cut, according to the Maine State Employees Association.

Rod Hiltz, executive director of the association, said Thursday afternoon that officials from the Department of Corrections were at the youth prison for most of that day, meeting with employees and administrators, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Hiltz said the 34.5 positions will be cut “over the next couple of weeks.” To date, no layoff notices have been issued, he said.

“We’ll have to see how many layoff letters they give people because even though the actual positions being cut are 34.5, the actual people being cut could be way greater than that,” Hiltz told the newspaper, saying the union fears the adult facility will require a different mix of staffing.

Phone calls by the BDN to the Department of Corrections seeking comment were not answered Thursday.
