Senior living communities planned for Wells, Brunswick
A Portland real estate developer and a New England senior care company plan to develop senior care communities in Wells and Brunswick that focus on memory care.
Sandy River Co., a developer that works in the health care and senior care industries, filed applications for the two facilities as part of a joint venture with Northbridge Cos., which operates senior living communities in Westbrook and several other New England towns.
Northbridge announced plans for the two 60-unit facilities on Monday. Both of them would emphasize memory care, for which the company’s president said there is a growing need.
“My partners and I have been serving seniors in New England for over 25 years, [and] with the growing aging population, it became apparent to us that we needed a better environment for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias,” Wendy Nowokunski, president of Northbridge, said in a statement. “Traditional assisted living often doesn’t cater to the special needs of someone with memory loss and with lack of other options many times we saw those with memory loss going to a nursing home.”
The two companies plan to build one of the 60-unit memory care communities on a land parcel next to York Hospital and Wells High School in Wells. The other 60-unit community is planned on a 14-acre site at Brunswick Landing.
Both communities would carry the Avita brand name, which the two companies have used for other joint ventures. That includes Avita of Stroudwater in Westbrook, a senior living community focused on memory care that opened in the fall of 2013. The facility now serves 60 families with an array of amenities, including a salon and computer lab, and supports more than 70 employees.
“We wanted to create a safe, home-like environment where residents with memory loss can continue to live meaningful lives with the right support and care. This is why we created Avita,” Nowokunski said. “I am proud to say we have three communities where over 200 residents and their families have joined our Avita family.”
