EMHS gets OK to buy Ellsworth hospital

The state has approved Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems’ proposed acquisition of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, which would become the system’s ninth hospital.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the proposed acquisition was endorsed by Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew in an Aug. 21 letter. The acquisition, still subject to review by Maine’s attorney general, is expected to close in October.

Maine Coast, which isn’t expected to make any staffing changes, has already worked with EMHS on multiple fronts. That includes the hospital’s shared oncology staff with the system’s Eastern Maine Medical Center and its participation in EMHS’ accountable care organization.
