Nova Star gets part of requested $2.5M subsidy

Nova Star Cruises has received a little less than half of its requested $2.5 million (Canadian) subsidy from Nova Scotia’s provincial government after having an initial request denied.

The Yarmouth County Vanguard reported that the latest distribution of $1.5 million was made after Nova Scotia’s transportation department determined that’s how much it needed to cover “pressing payables.” The province initially declined Nova Star’s funding request because it hadn’t provided updated financial information, but the issue has since been resolved.

The future of the heavily subsidized ferry service is still up in the air as Nova Scotia officials continue to deliberate on whether to use Nova Star or another operator for service between Portland and Nova Scotia for next year. The ferry service has received $9.6 million of the $13 million promised by Nova Scotia for this year.
