Nova Star reports disappointing August passenger count
The Nova Star ferry service between Portland and Nova Scotia reported Tuesday that its passenger count for August was down 22% from the same month last year and that overall for the season it was down 6% compared to the same point in its inaugural 2014 season.
The Portland Press Herald reported that 15,974 passengers rode the ferry in August, compared to 20,513 people last August. Its year-to-date count is 37,800 passengers, compared to 40,347 at this point last year, the newspaper reported.
Nova Star Cruises reported that the number of Canadians riding the ferry is down 40%, which the company attributed to the drop in the buying power of the Canadian dollar, which on Tuesday was trading at 75 cents in U.S. currency, the newspaper reported.
The future of the heavily subsidized ferry service is still up in the air as Nova Scotia officials continue to deliberate on whether to use Nova Star or another operator for service between Portland and Nova Scotia for next year. The ferry service has received $9.6 million of the $13 million promised by Nova Scotia for this year.
