Oxford Networks, BayRing Communications complete merger

Lewiston-based Oxford Networks has completed its merger with Portsmouth, N.H.-based BayRing Communications, which Oxford said in June upon announcing the merger plans would make it the largest competitive telecommunications provider headquartered in northern New England.

The two companies said Tuesday that they have received state and federal approval to merge. The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved the merger in late August. Since Oxford Networks and BayRing are telecommunications companies, the proposed merger also had to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission.

The new organization operates about 2,000 route miles of high-capacity, fiber optic network providing access to nearly 50,000 commercial buildings, four Service Organization Control data centers and direct access to all other major hub data centers in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, according to a statement by the companies.

Oxford has a solid footprint in Maine, while BayRing has a strong market presence in southern Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Craig Gunderson, Oxford Networks’ CEO, said in a statement that the merger creates a more competitive organization and gives customers greater choices and more solutions.

BayRing’s outgoing President Ben Thayer, who will retire, said the two organizations together will be better and stronger.

The merger effectively doubles the new organization’s revenue streams. For now, both entities said they will keep their respective names because they have recognition and brand equity in their markets. Major operations will continue in Portsmouth and Lewiston offices.
