State to assist 22 laid-off Lincoln millworkers

A Maine Department of Labor “Rapid Response” team is heading today to Lincoln to assist 22 Lincoln Paper and Tissue LLC workers laid off last week in conjunction with the indefinite shutdown of the mill’s No. 6 tissue-making machine.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the response team will help the laid-off employees with retraining, job hunting, unemployment compensation and health care coverage.

The layoffs at Lincoln Paper and Tissue coincide with layoffs at two other Maine paper mills in recent weeks, with Catalyst announcing on Sept. 1 it would keep its No. 12 coated paper machine at the Rumford Paper Mill out of production indefinitely, making permanent the 51 temporary layoffs that occurred in May, and Verso announcing in mid-August it would be eliminating 300 jobs at its paper mill in Jay.
