Maine companies win National SCORE Awards
In a first for Maine, two local companies have won 2015 National SCORE Awards, which recognize excellence in small business owners and nonprofits whose success has been impacted by SCORE's services.
Receiving the Outstanding Job-Creator Award was Margo Walsh, owner of MaineWorks LLC.
The Outstanding American Manufacturer Small Business Award went to Devin McNeill, owner of Flowfold.
Both recipients have received mentoring from members of the Portland chapter of SCORE.
SCORE presents 10 national awards per year. The awards honor “outstanding examples of successful, innovative SCORE clients as well as important advocates for small business,” according to a statement from the organization.
MaineWorks, in Portland, gives veterans reentering the workforce, immigrants, recovering drug or alcohol abusers and those with previous nonviolent convictions a chance to work temporarily at industrial construction jobs. In 2014, Walsh was a SCORE “success award” winner in the category of Successful Innovative Small Business. And she was among the 2014 Mainebiz Women to Watch.
Flowfold, on Peaks Island, designs and manufactures “durable, long-lasting, and lightweight carrying gear made from quality, responsible materials,” according to the company’s website. Its designer, Charles Friedman, won a 2014 SCORE success award in the category of Successful Young Entrepreneur Under 30 category.
