Former Brooklin Boat Yard bookkeeper charged with wire theft
Steven Nygren, owner of the Brooklin General Store and former bookkeeper for Brooklin Boat Yard, was arrested last week for allegedly stealing $750,000 from the boatyard and transferring it out of state, the Ellsworth American reported Sept. 18.
Nygren appeared in court Sept. 18 on the two Class B felony charges, unauthorized taking and forgery, for allegedly transferring by wire $750,000 to an unidentified Massachusetts person, according to The Weekly Packet.
Bail was set at $20,000 cash or $200,000 single surety, because of the risk of flight and recent and ongoing contact with connections outside of Maine. Conditions of the bail included no possessions of firearms, no contact with Brooklin Boatyard owner Steve White and employees Brent Morey and Frank Hull and no entry to the boatyard premises.
Brooklin Boat Yard, founded in 1960 by Joel M. White and currently operated by White’s son Steve, specializes in wooden boat design, construction, repair and maintenance.
Recent yard activities include the launch last June of a complex yacht named Foggy, the Ellsworth American reported. The Freres 74 hull and rig were designed by naval architect Germán Frere as a fast daysailer, and architect Frank Gehry designed intricate deadlights and a complex skylight that pierce the hull and deck, as well as the interior.
