Orono issues warning to apartment complex developer

The town of Orono told the developer of Orono’s largest student housing complex Monday that it must fix construction problems before getting an occupancy permit, the Bangor Daily News reported Wednesday.

Town officials conducting a recent inspection found that support footings for rear decks at two of the nine townhouses under construction were not installed correctly, an issue first identified by a third-party inspector.

The town began requiring large developers to hire a third-party inspector after the construction of The Grove, another privately owned student housing complex, had a litany of code problems after opening, the newspaper reported.

The Avenue Orono, located near the University of Maine, will be a 33-building complex with 270 units to house up to 897 tenants. It’s scheduled to open in summer 2016.
