Gallery expansion to be reviewed in Rockland

A proposal to build a five-story, $3 million building expanding the Dowling Walsh Gallery in downtown Rockland is going to the city’s Planning Board tonight, the Penobscot Bay Pilot reported Monday.

The first floor of the proposed 40,000-square-foot building, which would be located on a parking lot behind the gallery’s Main Street building, would provide a retail storefront for the gallery. The middle floors would be storage and a top floor would be used for offices.

If approved, construction is expected to begin in March 2016 and be completed in March 2017.

The project comes in the midst of a development boom that is seeing investors pour more than $20 million into a raft of projects, promising to leverage Rockland’s draw for visitors and residents all year round.

"It's a coincidence," that all these projects are coming online at the same time, gallery owner Jacob Dowling told Mainebiz in July, "but it's symbiotic."
