L.L. Bean boots already on back-order

Fall has been underway for about a week, and L.L. Bean is already reportedly running into a shortage of some styles and sizes of its iconic Bean boot, according to Bloomberg.

The Freeport-based retail chain struggled to keep up with demand of the popular duck boots last holiday season, ending up with 100,000 back-ordered pairs.

To prepare for this season, the company has hired 100 more boot-makers and installed a second injection-molding machine to produce the boots' rubber bottoms. The company will also continue  the third manufacturing shift it added last year, when it sold 450,000 Bean boots.

This year the company has said it expects to sell more than 500,000 pairs, up substantially from the 300,000 sold during the 2012-13 season.
