Winslow ordinance paves way for utility-scale solar project
The town of Winslow approved new regulations for utility-scale solar-electric projects Tuesday, potentially allowing a Yarmouth company to construct a solar farm that could be 20 times larger than the state’s current largest one.
The Morning Sentinel reported Wednesday that the ordinance to regulate large-scale solar energy systems that feed the grid is the first of its kind in Maine. Town officials told the paper that the changes were necessary for the solar company, Ranger Solar, to move ahead with the project
The company brought the proposal to the town earlier this year. It called for a 10-to-12-megawatt solar station on up to 100 acres on Heywood Road and would cost an estimated $25 million, the paper reported. That could generate enough power to serve 1,640 to 1,968 households, according to a national average from the Solar Energy Industries Association.
