Maine airline to begin nonstop flight service from Portland to Florida

Portland-based Elite Airlines said Tuesday it will start offering commercial flight service from Portland International Jetport to Melbourne International Airport in Florida in mid-December.

The company that began as a charter airline has its maintenance, crew training, sales and marketing offices in Melbourne, Fla. The service will begin Dec 18., the company said.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the airline announced earlier this month that it would offer scheduled flights starting Dec. 10 from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey to Vero Beach Municipal Airport in Florida.

A company spokeswoman told the Press Herald that the new service is aimed at the leisure market and people looking for nonstop flights from Maine to Florida.

The airline currently serves Newark Liberty International Airport, Chicago Rockford International Airport, Denver International Airport, Branson Airport in Missouri, Houston Hobby Airport, Fort Collins-Loveland Airport in Colorado and Vero Beach Municipal Airport in Florida.
