Verso shuts down machine at Jay mill, gives layoff notices to 300
Verso Corp.’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay shut down another paper machine Saturday and gave layoff notices to 300 employees last week as part of the company’s plan to scale back production originally announced in August.
The Morning Sentinel reported that the 300 paper mill employees were given 60-day notices and will have their last day of work in mid-December. The mill will continue to operate with a reduced capacity and 560 employees following the layoffs.
The Memphis, Tenn.-based company said in August that a declining demand in North American coated paper and high energy and its operating costs in Maine led to the decision to reduce production at the Jay mill and another mill in Kentucky.
The Morning Sentinel reported that the mill’s No. 1 pulp dryer was shut down several weeks ago, the No. 2 paper machine was shut down Saturday. Two paper machines and a specialty paper machine remain in operation.
The Maine Department of Labor has been working with employees through its Rapid Response program.
The company also also shut down its Bucksport paper mill in January, laying off about 500 workers.
