Maine tops list for hospital safety ratings

Maine’s hospitals received the highest percentage of top ratings for safety in a scorecard released Wednesday by a Washington, D.C.-based health care organization.

Of Maine’s 16 hospitals, 11 received “A” safety ratings from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that advocates for quality, safety and transparency in the country’s health system. At nearly 69%, that put Maine higher than any other state.

Three hospitals received Cs: St. Joseph Hospital of Bangor, Maine Medical Center in Portland and MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

The organization releases the ratings twice a year, and three Maine hospitals saw changes from the fall ratings, the Sun Journal reported. Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle improved from a B to an A, St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor dropped from a B to a C and Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston dropped from an A to a B.

Alan Harmatz, chief quality and patient safety officer at CMMC, told the Sun Journal that the hospital is “deeply disappointed at the score,” but that some of the data was two years old or older. He told the newspaper that the hospital has been working on improving care, protocols, monitoring and awareness in areas of concern.
