Maine groups receive grants for housing rehabilitation projects

Two organizations in Maine will receive a combined $347,800 in federal grants for the rehabilitation and repair of homes for low-income people in five counties.

The Associated Press reported that U.S. Department of Agriculture is awarding the Housing Preservation Grants to Penquis Community Action Program and Western Maine Community Action for projects in Franklin, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Knox and Waldo counties. Western Maine Community Action will receive $92,000 and Penquis Community Action Program will receive $255,800.

In a joint statement, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said the investments will help low-income families maintain good, safe homes.

“Maine’s bitterly cold winters present serious challenges for our state’s most vulnerable families, and this funding will help dozens of Mainers prepare their homes for the coming months,” they said in the statement.
