Aroostook County lumber company buys Fort Kent store
Lumber and building supply company S.W. Collins Co. has bought Quigley’s Building Supply in Fort Kent.
The fifth-generation, family-owned S.W. Collins has lumber and building supply stores in Caribou, Presque Isle, Houlton and a recently opened store in Lincoln. The company also provides kitchen and bath design services.
Quigley’s Building Supply, also a multi-generational, family-owned company, was founded in 1944. It has served as a general contractor for some of the Fort Kent area’s largest projects, including Fort Kent Community High School, Pinkham Lumber Mill in Ashland and buildings at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, according to a news release announcing the change.
Terms were not disclosed.
Karen Ouellette, the former owner of the Fort Kent company, said in the news release that she’s looking forward to retirement. The crew members with the company will remain with S.W. Collins, she said.
S.W. Collins, which began in 1844 with a sawmill in Caribou, is led by President Sam Collins and Vice President Gregg Collins, who are brothers. Sam Collins said being located in the St. John Valley will enable the company to better serve all of Aroostook County and beyond more efficiently.
“The entire S.W. Collins Co. is excited about becoming a part of the fabric of the local community and playing an active and positive role,” Sam Collins said in a statement.
