Portland sees record number of cruise ship visits

Portland saw a record number of cruise ships this year, while the state’s top cruise ship port, Bar Harbor, fell short of its own record due to bad water conditions.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Portland had 84 visits from cruise ships this year, 10 more than the 74 reported in 2014 and four above the previous high.

Bar Harbor had 117 visits this year, but 23 more were cancelled, all but one due to inclement conditions on the water.

According to Cruise Lines International Association, direct spending in Maine by cruise ship companies and passengers contributed $47 million to the state’s economy in 2014, an increase of $800,000 from the prior year. The cruise industry also supported an estimated 755 jobs in the state.
