Cianbro Corp. plans to open an employee training center in the former United Technologies Corp. tech center building in Pittsfield near the company’s headquarters.

The construction company has signed a lease for the former UTC building and plans to buy it from Pittsfield Economic Expansion Corp. next year and renovate it.

Andi Vigue, Cianbro’s president, told the Bangor Daily News that the company needs additional training space because it has been getting more work and workers are retiring from the industry. He said the company has hired about 500 employees this year.

Cianbro plans to add classrooms, office space for instructors, space for larger trainings and a fitness center.

The Morning Sentinel reported that the former UTC building at 129 Hunnewell Ave. has been vacant since UTC shuttered operations at its Pittsfield manufacturing plant earlier this year, laying off about 300 people. The manufacturing plant is separate from the tech center and is being shown for sale to several businesses.

Terms of the lease or sale agreement were not disclosed. The BDN reported that the property was listed for $575,000 earlier this year.
