Appeal of Brunswick train facility headed to state board

Construction on the train layover facility in Brunswick has been under construction since mid-October.
The controversial Brunswick train layover facility for Amtrak’s Downeaster service is headed to its final regulatory step next week.
The Maine Board of Environmental Protection will hear an appeal of an approved permit for the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority’s $12.4 million layover facility, but the Brunswick neighborhood group could still appeal a decision to Superior Court, the Portland Press Herald reported.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection approved the construction of the 60,000-square-foot train holding and service facility in June. DEP staff have recommended the board reject the appeal by the Brunswick West Neighborhood Coalition, the Press Herald reported.
The layover facility, which has been under construction since last month, would allow the rail authority to store and service trains overnight in Brunswick instead of moving empty trains to and from Portland.
Patricia Quinn, executive director of the rail authority, told the paper that she hopes the facility will be complete by next August.
