Upgrade planned for Maine Air National Guard rescue station

U.S. Sen. Angus King toured the Maine Air National Guard’s 101st Air Refueling Wing’s fire crash and rescue station in Bangor on Thursday, two days after the Senate approved two bills that would provide $7.2 million to upgrade the facility.

The funding will be used to renovate the rescue station, including replacing the roof and siding, improving energy efficiency through the use of thermal systems and replacing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system to improve indoor air quality. It will also allow the Maine Air National Guard to reconfigure the existing space to better meet the needs of the roughly 35 full-time employees at the station.

“Maine’s 101st Air Refueling Wing plays an important role in supporting our national security,” King, an independent from Maine, said in a statement. “They deserve to have facilities that adequately meet the demands of their work, and this $7.2 million in federal funding will go a long way in upgrading the fire and rescue building to support the critical operations undertaken there.”

King, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he worked to secure the authorization for the $7.2 million in federal funding as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine, worked to secure the money in the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill, King’s office said in a news release.

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the defense act soon and the military construction and veterans affairs bill bill will likely be wrapped up into a larger spending package that Congress is expected to pass before Dec. 11, according to King’s office.
