LePage says hydropower from Canada needed

Maine Gov. Paul LePage told attendees Friday at a New England-Canada energy conference in Boston that the construction of transmission lines bringing hydropower from Canada is needed to combat the region’s high energy costs.

The Associated Press reported that the Republican governor said energy costs were crippling the region's ability to attract industry and remain competitive. LePage also advocated for increasing the supply of natural gas to the region.

Philippe Couillard, the premier of Quebec, said at the conference that his province would enter into new long-term contracts to provide additional electrical generating capacity to the New England states, the AP reported.
