U.S. trade officials back tariffs on Canadian paper producers

Paper mills in Madison and Jay succeeded in their push for the U.S. Department of Commerce to continue imposing duties on some supercalendered paper imported from Canada.

The Bangor Daily News reported that U.S. trade officials on Wednesday approved tariffs up to 20 percent on certain paper producers in Canada they determined to have received government subsidies that hurt American producers of supercalendered paper.

Officials with the mills in Madison and Jay told the Morning Sentinel that they were pleased with the decision by U.S. International Trade Commission.

UPM Madison and Verso Paper Corp. own all of the production capacity for that supercalendered paper in the United States, according to the BDN.
