Early negotiations under way between BIW and union

Bath Iron Works and its largest union have begun negotiations Monday in hopes of signing a contract before the end of the year.

The Associated Press reported that the Navy shipbuilder told the union that it wants to complete negotiations before the contract expires May 22. The early negotiations are aimed at helping BIW make a stronger bid to build Coast Guard cutters.

The shipyard has told its 6,000 workers that there will be steep cuts if it fails to land the contract.

Jay Wadleigh, president of the Local S6 of the Machinists union, declined to comment on negotiations to the AP. Wadleigh said earlier this month that some of the changes being asked by BIW will make it difficult to reach an agreement by the end of the year.
