Report: Shuttered Waterville market still owes farmers money

The closing of Barrels Community Market in downtown Waterville has left some area farmers being owed thousands of dollars for their produce and products.

The store operated by the Waterville Food Cooperative closed in August for restructuring, but the cooperative's board of directors told members in September that the store wouldn't be reopening.

The Morning Sentinel reported that several area farmers say they still haven’t been paid for products totalling thousands of dollars.

David Shipman, president of Barrels’ board of directors, declined to comment to the paper, besides saying the board is working to get farmers and suppliers at least partially repaid.
