Former Verso mill in Bucksport to be demolished next week

The scrap metal company that bought the Bucksport mill owned by Verso Paper Corp. will begin tearing it down next week.

The Ellsworth American reported that AIM Development LLC, a subsidiary of American Iron and Metal, the Montreal-based metal recycling firm, has received demolition permits from both the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the town. Demolition is set to begin Nov. 30, the paper reported.

Verso Paper closed the $60 million sale of its shuttered Bucksport mill to AIM Development in late January, roughly a month after shutting down the plant and laying off more than 500 employees.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the scrap metal firm hasn’t what it will do with the site on the Penobscot River once the mill is demolished but has suggested it likely will try to redevelop it, as it is doing with another former Verso mill in Minnesota.
