Planned pellet manufacturing plant in Penobscot County delayed

A plan to turn a former school in Mattawamkeag into a small-scale wood pellet manufacturing plant has been delayed until likely mid-2016.

The Bangor Daily News reported that developer David Kidwell of Pinetree Pellet Fuels said that the plan is still moving forward, even though Kidwell had hoped to have the plant operational in October.

The project was proposed last spring, and voters overwhelmingly approved it at a special town meeting in March.

The plan calls for the installation of two machines that would manufacture up to 20,000 tons of softwood pellets for home-heating use and regional sale. As many as 18 people would be employed, the Bangor Daily News reported.
