Maine creator of swim fins for amputees to begin production in January
A Maine man has received a federal patent for fins he created to help amputees swim better and expects to begin commercial production next month.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Randy Lord of Danforth began developing the fins, called Amp Fins, more than two years ago. Lord, who lost a leg below the knee in a work-related incident, told the BDN that he decided to create the fins because he never saw amputees like himself swimming in the ocean.
G&G Products LLC of Kennebunk created the prototype molds for the fins and will be manufacturing the molds and fins once commercial production begins, the BDN reported. Cory LaPlante, an above-knee amputee and certified prosthetist at Northern Prosthetics & Orthotics in Presque Isle will do the pre-fabrication.
The price for the fins, including the prosthetist fees and fittings, will be just under $1,000.
Lord’s company was featured in a February 2014 Mainebiz story about entrepreneurs starting companies after retiring from other careers.
