Natural gas expansion in Lincoln delayed due to mill closure, lower heating oil prices

Bangor Natural Gas’ planned expansion in Lincoln will be delayed until at least 2017 because of the shutdown of the Lincoln Paper and Tissue LLC mill and lower oil prices that make natural gas conversions less appealing.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the conversion of three schools in Lincoln would have anchored the next phase of gas-line construction, but with the price of heating oil falling to decade lows, the local school district can’t justify the investment.
Before the Lincoln Paper and Tissue LLC mill shutdown last month, town and mill officials had said the natural gas pipeline system was the cornerstone to keeping the mill competitive and allowing Lincoln to remain the economic hub for northern Penobscot County, according to the BDN.
Bangor Natural Gas officials also told the school district leaders that the loss of revenue from the paper mill has left the company unable to fund the extension of the gas lines from West Broadway to Main Street
Bangor Natural Gas completed the first phase its expansion into Lincoln a year ago by installing pipelines into Lincoln from a spur off a natural gas pipeline in nearby Mattamiscontis Township.
