Time Warner Cable data breached

Data breaches may be a fact of life. On Wednesday, Time Warner Cable announced that as many as 320,000 customers may have had their email addresses and passwords exposed.

According to a Facebook post by the Augusta Police Department, of particular concern are Time Warner customers who have an email address via the Roadrunner service and whose address ends “@rr.com.”

According to the Bangor Daily News, a company spokeswoman declined to disclose how many of the possibly compromised email accounts belong to Maine residents.

The public sector, information sector (e.g., telecommunications, data processing and publishing industries) and financial services industry are the top three business sectors most affected by information security incidents, according to Verizon's "2015 Data Breach Investigations Report." The average cost of a data breach reached $3.79 million last year, according to the Traverse City, Mich.-based Ponemon Institute.
