College cuts energy usage and costs

Unity College said an energy retrofit to one of its oldest buildings, the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, will save it both money and energy usage.

The college said the retrofits will save an estimated $14,776 in costs and 6,300 kilowatt-hours of electricity use annually. It also resulted in using 5,935 fewer gallons of heating oil.

The energy-saving project replaced old incandescent light bulbs with LED lamps, hot water heating coils with an air source heat pump hot water heater and sealed air leaks in the basement and attic. The heat pumps are programmable so the school could get more savings through smart scheduling.

“The ultimate goal was to improve the building’s structure, to not only have less of an environmental impact, but also to increase the cost-efficiency of operations, ideally saving more finances to provide more services to the community,” Unity College President Melik Peter Khoury said.

The total project cost was $107,373, with $39,520 from the Grants to Green Maine program and $12,850 in combined rebates from Efficiency Maine and the heat pump manufacturer. The remainder of the funds came from operating funds and the Unity College’s revolving Green Fund.

Khoury became the 11th president of Unity College on Jan. 4.
