Cape Air finds robust market in Maine

Maine has been a growing market for the small regional airline Cape Air, which has operated out of Owls Head, Trenton and Augusta for the last eight years, providing connections to Boston's Logan Airport, The Working Waterfront reported.

Despite ups and downs in passenger counts, Cape Air has grown the overall number of passengers over the previous airline carrier, Trish Lorino, Cape Air's vice president for marketing and public affairs, told the paper.

"Maine has really become a very robust market for us," Lorino said.

Maine’s small airports are essential to connecting rural areas to business centers elsewhere, providing a slew of general aviation services such as facilities for corporate travel, pilot training, agricultural spraying, recreational flying and just-in-time shipping; serving as a gateway for visitors, law enforcement, environmental patrol, emergency medical evacuation, forest firefighting, aerial photography, traffic-and-news reporting, air shows and aviation clubs; filling in the gaps for commercial passengers that might more regularly rely on larger airports in Portland, Bangor or Augusta.

They generate $1.5 billion in economic activity, comprising 3.3% of Maine's estimated gross state product.
