Unified Lewiston-Auburn government considered

The Lewiston-Auburn Charter Commission has released a draft charter proposing the unification of the two municipalities, the Sun Journal reported.

About two-thirds of Maine’s population lives within 30 miles of L/A, and both cities have seen a lot of interest in ongoing investment and revitalization in recent years.

According to the commission’s website, the two municipalities have “Long been one community. The goal is to “take a fresh look at our resources and build a new Auburn + Lewiston that becomes a model 21st century city. If we can start with a clean slate, why can’t we innovate and become Maine’s most desirable place to live, learn, work, and play?”

"We imagined five wards, each twice the size in terms of representation, than they currently are," commission Chairman Gene Geiger told the paper. At least one ward would cross the river. "If you have wards that cross the river, you have that shared linkage — like a bridge over the river,” he said.

L/A has been on an economic development trajectory in recent years to leverage competitive advantages, including transportation assets; available space for businesses; its place as a hub of rail, vehicle and air access; a tradition of service and manufacturing industries; and the development of downtowns and riverfronts.

A public meeting to discuss the charter will likely be scheduled in February.
