Camden complex to be converted to senior community
Three connected commercial buildings that run along Mechanic Street in downtown Camden are being renovated, with new owners Joseph and Paula Goudreau planning to convert the upper floors into a community of 32 apartments for people 55 years and older, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The new apartments will allow older residents to stay in Camden, Joseph Goudreau told the paper.
Construction of senior living communities is on-trend. Similar projects around Maine in 2015 included plans for a 128-unit luxury senior housing complex in South Portland, conversion of a former high school in Augusta into affordable senior housing and senior care communities in Wells and Brunswick that focus on memory care.
According to seniorliving.org, senior housing in Maine is challenged by the state’s cost of living — 14% higher than the national average, with housing costs 40% higher than the national average.
In Camden, the ground floor of the buildings will remain commercial, as required under the town’s zoning laws.
