Program hopes to spur economic development following mill closing
A new program has secured funding that aims to provide entrepreneurial advising and training for those who have been affected by the December 2014 closing of the Verso Paper Mill in Bucksport.
The program is designed to supply current and hopeful business owners with professional knowledge about developing and growing a small business in the area. As part of the program, The Maine Small Business Development Center will staff a business advising outreach office at a Bucksport Bangor Savings Bank location where at no cost, a certified business advisor will be available for consultation.
In addition to the no-cost advising program, the Maine SBDC will be hosting several tourism-focused workshops and providing “mini-grants” to select small businesses for professional services related to the program.
The Maine Small Business Development Centers received the funds from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Portable Assistance Grant Program to develop the program in coordination with CEI and other local economic development organizations.
"This grant will provide targeted critical resources to enable us to enhance services to this struggling area," Mark Delisle, Maine SBDC state director, said in a statement.
