Texas Instruments will “reshore” some operations, benefiting South Portland

On Wednesday, Texas Instruments announced that its South Portland production plant would be gaining more work after the semiconductor producer said it would be closing a manufacturing plant in Scotland.

According to a report by The Portland Press Herald, it could take up to three years for the production transition to be complete, and that layoffs from the Scottish plant wouldn’t occur sooner than late next year.

The movement of production from the Scottish plant to the South Portland location as well as locations in Japan and Germany are due to the higher cost of production in Scotland according to a statement by the semiconductor giant.

Currently the South Portland plant employs about 540 workers. No new jobs are expected to be gained from the transition.
