Maine tribal communities awarded HUD grants

Both the Penobscot Indian Nation and the Houlton Band of Maliseets are the recipients of Housing and Urban Development grants.

On Wednesday, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the two tribal communities had been awarded a HUD Indian Housing Block Grant totaling $388,466 with the Penobscot Nation receiving $249,462 and the Houlton Band of Maliseets receiving $139,004.

The HUD grant is a formula grant that provides funds to develop affordable housing activities on Indian reservations and areas. Included in these activities are housing developments, assistance to housing developed under the Indian Housing Program, and developing new approaches to affordable housing problems.

"These important investments in Maine's tribal communities will help support vital projects to maintain and improve the availability of safe, affordable housing on their lands," said Senators Collins and King in a prepared statement.
