Hallowell developer wants to demolish 19th century building

Builder Steve Hammond has proposed demolishing a mixed-use structure at 226 Water St. in Hallowell, but Row House, a nonprofit that works to preserve Hallowell’s historic sites, said it believes the building dates to the mid-1850s and qualifies for preservation, the Kennebec Journal reported.

Row House was formed in 1969 “to preserve Hallowell’s rich history as told through its buildings,” according to the organization’s website. Its first project was the purchase and preservation of “what was seen to be the most endangered historic property, the Gage Block,” a wooden row house built in 1846. The organization also succeeded in creating a 207-acre historic district in Hallowell and preserving other structures.

Hammond’s attorney, Walter McKee, told Hallowell’s planning board that Hammond had not come up with a specific plan for the property yet . The board tabled the matter, pending information from the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.
