Former state prison lot eyed for Dollar General development
The expansive 16-acre lot that once was home to the Maine State Prison in Thomaston could finally see some development, as a proposal is set to go before the town’s planning board on Tuesday.
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Franklin Land Associates LLC is proposing the development and construction of a Dollar General Store on 1.73 acres directly next to the former Maine State Prison lot on Main Street/Route 1 in Thomaston.
The lot that is being eyed for development is located on the northeast side of a Strong Insurance Agency location and is owned by Jlinn LLC, which is partially owned by town resident John Miller.
According to The Bangor Daily News, which quoted planning board member Jeff Creighton, the Tennessee developer will have to meet Thomaston’s commercial design standards. The former prison site’s Main Street-Route One location is a short distance from downtown Thomaston and is surrounded by a residential area.
The town has made it clear that a commercial development would need to look as close to residential as possible following a vote in 2012 by town residents that also allotted $250,000 to lot develop in addition to setting forth the aesthetic requirements for commercial developments on the plot.
