Portland lager recognized as one of America's best

A five-year-old nano-brewery based in Portland’s popular East Bayside community has been recognized by “Food & Wine” magazine for crafting one of America’s Best Lagers.

Bunker Brewing Company’s Machine Czech Pilz is joined on the state-by-state list with lagers from more nationally recognized brewers, including California-based Anchor Brewing Company’s Anchor California Lager and Dogfish Head’s Piercing Pils from Delaware.

“Food & Wine” commended Bunker’s dedication as a smaller brewery in making a quality lager, a process that can be more taxing on time and resources than brewing ales.

According to Bunker, its Machine Czech Pilz is “Old World charm in a glass, Bunker-style” where “Biscuity German malt meets boatloads of grassy Saaz hops.”

“The line about dedication to the craft of making lagers is really on point,” Bunker brewer and co-owner Chresten Sorensen told The Bangor Daily News. “It’s always nice to be recognized for putting in the time to make these really delicate, clean beers that take more effort and time.”
