$1 million tree-clearing to address safety at Biddeford airport

Biddeford Municipal Airport intends to obtain the land rights that will allow the Federal Aviation Administration to fund tree-clearing on both ends of its runway, the Journal Tribune reported.

The tree-clearing is part of a nearly $1 million project to address safety concerns at the airport.

Airport Commission Chairman Rick Laverriere told the paper the airport’s goal is to work with Gale Associates, the engineering firm leading the tree-clearing project, to find a way to obtain the necessary land rights.

The small airport has previously been the cause of years of dispute, with neighbors protesting tree cutting and the enforcement of no-trespassing rules on the popular space. In 2008, voters rejected a proposal to close the airport.

Laverriere told the Journal Tribune he would not speculate on what would happen if the airport is not able to obtain the land rights.
