Crisis averted: Byrnes will be open for St. Patrick's Day following flood
Mainers looking to celebrate their varying degrees of Irish Heritage at Byrnes Irish Pub in Brunswick will have even more of a reason to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day, as owner Joe Byrnes announced that the pub would reopen on Saturday after thousands of gallons of water poured through the pub three weeks ago.
The pub and its neighbor, the eatery Scarlet Begonias, were forced to close following a second floor water pipe rupturing in mid-February, flooding both businesses with thousands of gallons of water, Deputy Chief Donald Koslosky of the Brunswick Fire Department told the Bangor Daily News.
Complicating matters was the below freezing temperatures that firefighters had to work through as they used large squeegees to push the water from the second floor onto Station Avenue in Brunswick.
Dozens of local contractors worked up to 12-hour days since the flooding to insure the pub would be open in time for its annual 6 a.m. “Kegs and Eggs” breakfast, which is followed by all-day festivities, including a performance by the Maine Pipe and Drum Corps.
During the repairs Byrnes made a number of upgrades to the Irish pub, including increasing the number of draft beer lines and upgrading the lighting, according to the BDN.
Byrnes will officially reopen on Saturday at noon, with a ribbon-cutting and a performance by the Maine Public Safety Pipe & Drum Corps scheduled that afternoon.
