Former Dakin building home to high-end apartments

Roy Hubbard, a Bangor developer, renovated the long-vacant Dakin Building — now known as 28 Broad Street Lofts.
After two years and a $2 million investment, the conversion of the former Dakin Sporting Goods building in downtown Bangor is complete.
The site, mostly vacant since the late 1990s, now includes 15 high-end residential apartment units, including three “super luxury” ground-floor units.
According to the Bangor Daily News, rents range from $2,200 to $2,500 per month — with most tenants moving from outside of the state to work at nearby hospitals, or to attend classes at area universities.
The building’s developer, Roy Hubbard, told Mainebiz in an August interview that the location of Bangor was ideal for development.
"I fell in love with the Bangor area," Hubbard told Mainebiz. "Bangor sits right in the middle of a triangle between Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park and Sugarloaf." The 2012 University of Maine graduate had worked his fair share of construction sites, and knew he wanted a career in real estate. "I knew I was going to be in real estate somewhere, and I didn't want to uproot and start all over again.”
High-end apartments have gained prevalence in downtown Bangor in recent years, with the former Merchant’s Bank building across the street from the Dakin building opening last year with luxury units and a restaurant on the ground floor.
