Transportation providers expand routes following CTI closure
A pair of transportation companies in Belfast and Lewiston-Auburn will assume control of public transportation services in Maine’s midcoast region following the announced closure of Coastal Trans Inc. in April.
The Belfast-based Waldo Community Action Partners will take over Coastal Transportation’s services in Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Waldo counties, as well as the municipalities of Brunswick and Harpswell, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Community Action Partners will continue to offer its service for Waldo County, executive director Keith Small said that with its expanded service range it is hopeful it will be able to retain some members of Coastal Transportation’s staff following its closure.
“We look forward to working with the staff of Coastal Trans Inc. to effect a transition with as little disruption to the regular CTI ridership as possible,” Small said in a prepared statement about the service expansion.
Western Maine Transportation, which operates city buses in Lewiston-Auburn, in addition to providing transportation for MaineCare recipients in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, will take over the Brunswick Explorer Bus Service's route
CTI announced that it would cease operations after 33 years due to a drastic drop in ridership from MaineCare patients following the 2013 introduction of a new transportation system by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, when a group of regional brokers were chosen to sub-contract services for patients with other transportation providers.
