Maine Department of Labor sets all-time job listings record

An increase in employers looking to hire at job fairs around the state has led to the Maine Department of Labor setting an all-time record in the number of openings posted on its job listing website this month.

“We have seen a sharp increase in employers at our job fairs, and we have almost doubled the number of job fairs we are doing from 2014 to 2015,” Julie Rabinowitz, spokeswoman for the department told the Bangor Daily News. She expects even more job fairs to occur this year.

The Labor Department started April with 10,195 open positions advertised on its website, according to the BDN.

Rabinowitz said the increase in demand for job fairs across Maine is in response to recent larger layoffs, including the loss of work at the Brunswick-based Merrymeeting Behavioral Health Associates.

“For example, we have had more than three dozen employers contact us about hiring the Merrymeeting [Behavioral Health Associates] workers,” Rabinowitz told the BDN.

The Department of Labor will be holding its next job fair on Monday at Southern New Hampshire University in Brunswick from 9 a.m. to noon.
