UMaine Business Challenge announces finalists

The UMaine Business Challenge, Maine’s only business plan competition open to all Maine college students, has announced the finalists from three different universities vying for $20,000 in prizes.

With ideas ranging from Virtual Reality applications to a mobile food ordering app for local restaurants, the finalists will pitch their ideas on April 23, according to the Bangor Daily News.

$5,000 will be awarded to the first place winner, while The Maine Business School will award $1,000 to the second place runner-up. An additional $10,000 is up for grabs for the finalist with the best technology-based idea, while all finalists will receive free entry into the Maine Center for Entrepreneurial Development’s Top Gun Prep program.

The Business Challenge finalists are:

  • Dan Vogel and Scott Lehman from Colby College, for a mobile food ordering app for Mid-Maine area local restaurants.
  • Zachariah Palmeter from the University of Maine, for software that provides Virtual Reality experiences for those with disabilities.
  • Shaun Veilleux and Kevin Conroy from the University of Maine, for an adjustable bluetooth speedometer that calibrates to the current tire size on a vehicle for increased safety and reliability.
  • Hoang Anh “Christine” Le and Andrea Cunney from the University of Maine, for a smartphone app that provides a centralized promotional platform for events on campus.
  • Colby Kohn from Eastern Maine Community College, who is the founder of a video production group looking to focus on creating promotional videos for use on social media platforms.
  • Nicholas Aiken and Chris Giroux from University of Maine, who are the winners of the Black Bear Hackathon, for their Aquabuddies aquaponics system.
