Independent Ellsworth furnishing company calls it a day

The Ellsworth-based J&B Atlantic Co. has announced that it will be calling it a day after nearly 20 years of being an anchor of the downtown commercial district of the city.

The owners of the home décor and furnishing store, Jon Hutchins and Bill Sanborn, told the Ellsworth American that the store will be closing on April 30, before re-opening in early May for a going-out-of-business sale.

Hutchins and Sanborn told the weekly newspaper that the shuttering of the store comes at a time when independent businesses like J&B are struggling with changing buying trends from consumers — a double-edged sword for the business partners who also own the 87-year-old brick building.

The duo said they are currently looking for other tenants to lease the expansive downtown space.

“The same changing trends that have made the venue less viable for [this] particular brand of retail are also bringing new possibilities and opportunities for future use of the building,” Hutchins and Sanborn told the American.
